Pneumatic tires have more than 100 year’s history. And the years have been marked by constant progress in tire industry. Modern tire manufacturers constantly improve their technology, introducing new recipes of rubber compounds, improving tread pattern, etc. But what would you say when you know that there is an entire industry that works… directly opposite – using the mixture recipes according to nearly century-old technologies!
These are the tires for oldtimers - cars that took their place in the cohort of classics in the garages of collectors and museums. It is clear that for them it is impossible to find the original tire. Then they come to the aid of modern magicians of tire industry. Old models are produced by even such large concerns as Continental and Michelin, not to mention dozens of smaller firms. At the exit - a tire that does not distinguish in appearance from the original, but uses modified rubber compound that provides greater durability.
On the other hand the progress of technology sometimes leads to more interesting results. For example, Kumho company pleased fans of street racing with a special model of the tires, which are emitting smoke when braking of a… pink color! Glamorous, no doubt. You have to pay with the uneven wear and tear, but what do not make to impress the others!
Or in the sake of PR. In this category the leader is Michelin, moreover, he has been traditionally a leader since the very beginning of the development industry. Their latest sensational development - Tweel Tire, which cannot be called pneumatical. Most of all, they are like conveyor belts, dressed to the rim. Despite the fact that that specialists are trying to convict that they have shown great results during the tests, these tires should not be considered seriously as an alternative to pneumatic. Just imagine them after the winter night parking or travel through the mud. But the PR effect was a success.
But there are situations where the same PR effect is not the result of planned actions but a consequence of market requirements. The biggest tire in the world - Bridgestone 59 / 80 R63 V-Steel E-Lug S and Michelin 59/80 R63 XDR, intended for large trucks. More than 4 meters in height, more than 5 tons of weight – tire were in the Guinness Book of Records undoubtedly not for nothing!
But on the practical side more interesting is another record, which Continental specialists had recorded in the contest for the biggest run on the same tire. Record exceeded all expectations - a light truck driver was able to travel on one set of more than 700 000 km. In this case, even following the requirements of TUV, tire are still suitable for operation!

Bridgestone tires history started in the year 1900 when tiny Firestone Company was founded. It produced rubbed products (by no means auto- or mototyres). But soon they began manufacturing tires and in the year 1911 Firestone tires promoted the victory in Indy 500 racing. In the year 1931 Japanese rubber shoes producer Shojiro Ishibashi founded Bridgestone, Ltd. And in 1988 Bridgestone and Firestone made the united organization. It had changed various manes before it became Bridgestone. During its evolution the company owned shares of a great number of the European companies and became one of the influential organizations at the tire market. Now the stuff enumerates 150 people.
In 2001 Bridgestone was considered to be the leading Run-flat (Potenza RE040 RFT) tire Company. In 2004 Bridgestone became the main truck tire outfitter. In June they opened Test Range in Rome. Its area is 144 hectares. The tests can be held for the whole year. There were invested over 40 mln euro into the building.
