The tires taking part in the tests can be divided into two categories, namely the 165/70 R14T and the 205/55 R16V-sized ones. Continental came up to be the only manufacturer whose products got highest marks in both categories. The experts called the 14-inch ContiEcoContact5 and the 16-inch ContiPremiumContact 5 the best purchase.

Bridgestone engineers have lately worked out the innovative Contact Area Information Sensing system (the CAIS) for the company’s tires. This year the innovation is awarded by the Spanish Actualidad Economica journal for its undoubted potential in the sphere of road safety.

Actualidad Economica, the leading economic and financial journal, included the CAIS in the top 100 best ideas 2011. The list is comprised of various technologies and devices capable of bringing the real changed in different branches of industry. The winners 2012 will be unveiled in the May’s issue while the award ceremony will take place in the nearest future.

Bridgestone begins to implement a large-scale research aimed at getting rubber from guayule, low and highly branchy bushes, which is an excellent renewable raw material.

The project will be carried out in collaboration with the company’s employees from North and South America and those from its Japanese headquarters. An American branch deals with the choice of an appropriate place for a “pilot” farm and, later on, for a future plant. The Japanese are responsible for money matters while the research itself will be carried out by the Technical Center in Acrone and the Research and Technology Center North America.

The construction of a new plant is scheduled to start this year already while the first guayule tires will appear no sooner than 2015, Bridgestone says.

This is a breathtaking and exciting project that can help the company satisfy consumer demand on tires made from natural rubber. At the same time, it can lead to the real breakthrough in tire-making industry. The European Autobild journal has published the results of the first stage of summer tire testing. This year they compared dry and wet braking distance of 50 tire models. Continental ContiSportContact 5 showed excellent numbers, which allowed it to enter the top 5. The vehicle began braking at a speed of 62 mph and stopped after 36.8 meters on a dry road while in the wet braking distance made up 43.7 meters.

Only 15 best tires will enter the second stage of Autobild testing. There’re such tires as the sporty Uniroyal RainSport 2 and the affordable Barum Bravuris 2, the latter proving that even non-expensive tires can deliver excellent braking and reliable handling in the wet.

All in all, the Autobild journalists carried out about 1,700 tests at a speed of 100 mph and only 25 per cent of the tires managed to cope with this task successfully. Every third tire’s braking was qualified as “unsafe.” For example, some tires stopped 28 meters farther that the ContiSportContact 5, which is 5 times longer than standard car.

The second stage of Autobild testing is scheduled for the next week and will be dedicated to hydroplaning and overall handling.
