Michelin X-Ice North 2 is a studded winter tire for passenger cars. Being a second-generation tire, it succeeds the X-Ice North model and is improved in terms of braking, snow traction, steering response and road-holding ability.
The tire shows reliable performance on ice and snow thanks to its Full Active Tread technology of tread patterning. There’re almost no inactive zones on the tread surface while the absence of circumferential grooves provides for traction on ice. Tread blocks are arranged at different angles ranging from 0 to 45 degrees, which ensures precise steering response on snow-covered roads.
In comparison to the X-Ice North previous model, the tire features 12 rows of studs, the quantity having been increased from 10 to 12. The shape of studs was designed to provide for their firm fixation in the tire tread. The tread itself consists of two layers, there’s an outer “Flex-Ice” soft layer for excellent grip on ice while an inner “StabiliStud” layer firmly holds studs inside the tread.
Ninety per cent of studs are 1.2 mm high, which is optimal as high studs results in their unreliable position in the tread and their untimely loss while low studs cause longer braking distance.
